Bayville Bridge Rehabilitation

LKB provided design services for the rehabilitation of a double leaf bascule bridge and approaches with a total length of 540 feet. The project is a federally funded Nassau County project utilizing NYSDOT local aid procedures. Work completed to date includes the bridge inspection and evaluation, the preparation of a Design Report, Environmental Permitting, and preparation of final bridge rehabilitation contract plans, specifications and Engineer’s Construction Cost Estimate. LKB will provide engineering and construction support during the construction phase.

Structural work elements include rehabilitation and upgrading of the steel and concrete approach spans and steel bascule spans, widening the concrete and steel grate sidewalks, as well as replacing railing and deck joints. Work below the bridge includes adding cover plates to the concrete encased steel girders, bearing retrofit, track girder replacement, replacing the timber fender system, repairing the stonework of the piers and abutments, and bridge painting. Improvements will also be made to the adjacent pocket park, including new sidewalks, benches, railings, and plantings.

Electrical work elements include lighting upgrades to various bridge and fender elements and a change from a manual to a fully automated bridge lift control system. Mechanical work elements include the replacement of the tread plates, tail locks, and drive and braking systems.
