CR 111 at I-495, Exit #70 header

About this Project

LKB was retained by Suffolk County Department of Public Works to provide construction management and construction inspection services for this bridge modification project.

The existing bridge consisted of two bridge structures separated by an open longitudinal joint between the fascia of eachbridge, with a half of a raised concrete median on each bridge deck, also with an open joint. This project consisted of removing the raised concrete median, removing the fascia deck overhangs, and a portion of the existing deck in order to eliminate the open joint and connect the two bridges together. This was achieved by placing structural steel diaphragms between the fascia girder of each bridge and then pouring a new reinforced concrete deck of the retrofitted portion of the bridge. This work was required in order to provide dual northbound left turn lanes from County Route 111 (CR 111) to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) westbound on-ramp. In addition, the I-495 westbound on-ramp was also widened to accommodate for the new left turn lanes on the bridge, along with the placement of traffic signals, pedestrian crossing devices, new pavement markings and signage.

LKB’s services included detailed inspection, on-site field testing of materials and other construction activities, including field measurement and collection of data, submission of monthly and final estimates and progress reports, and preparation of record plans showing all changes from the contract plans. The construction management/inspection services included overseeing all construction operations and the placement of Work Zone Traffic Control.
