Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve (Merrick Landfill Conversion)
About this Project
LKB provided detailed plans, specifications and variances for the reclamation closure and partial capping of a 48-acre municipal solid waste landfill for the Town of Hempstead Department of Sanitation. The work included preparation of a park master plan, contract documents with layout, grading and drainage plans, and developing capping details and storm drainage plans for a six-acre plateau area to be capped with synthetic liners. As a wetlands restoration plan, water sampling and permit acquisition was also part of this project. Analysis included vegetation inventory, watershed, slope, wetland delineation, pedestrian and vehicular circulation, and photo catalog of existing conditions. Design elements included a 500-foot-long fishing pier, fitness trail, restroom facilities and landscaping. This innovative design project transformed the former landfill into a unique environmental and educational center, and saved the Town of Hempstead $45 million in site closure costs.
