Rehabilitation of Five Sewage Pump Stations header

About this Project

LKB was retained by Nassau County Department of Public Works to prepare plans, specifications and cost estimates, and provide construction support services for the rehabilitation of five pump stations that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The NCDPW pump stations are located at Cedar Drive, Roosevelt Boulevard, Whitewood Drive, Biltmore Boulevard and Alhambra Road in Massapequa, NY, and range in size from 200 GPM to 1000 GPM.

Work efforts included the replacement of emergency generators, sewage pumps, sump pumps, grinder pumps, odor control systems, gas detection systems, unit heaters, ventilation lovers, and lighting. In addition, a reinforced concrete wall and brickwork was designed to withstand higher flood elevations, as well as flood proof doors.

The Pump Station Rehabilitation project consisted of the design of repairs and retrofits for five sewage pump stations for the Nassau County Department of Public Works in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. All the pump stations are located in coastal regions and were inundated with the storm surge. Design efforts included the replacement of crucial equipment that was affected, as well as incorporating new mitigation practices to prevent damage from future storms.

LKB’s duties included field inspections, design calculations, and plan and specification development. Upon acceptance of the contract documents, LKB provided services during the bidding phase, which included responding to inquiries from prospective bidders; review of contractors’ qualifications and references; preparation of a bid summary; and recommendation of the award to the lowest responsible and qualified bidder. LKB’s construction support services during the construction phase included review and approval of detailed shop drawings, catalog cuts, and miscellaneous submittals for compliance with contract documents; review and responses to RFI’s (Request for Information) and Change Order Requests; and attendance of progress and project meetings, as necessary.
