About this Project

LKB was the lead designer responsible for highway design, drainage design, SWPPP, traffic signal design, pavement design, signage and pavement markings, WZTC, landscape architecture, sidewalks & curbs, lighting, and utilities for NYS Route 347, from Terry Road to Gibbs Pond Road in Smithtown, NY.

This fast-track, design-build project created a greenway corridor along a 1.1 mile section of roadway. The work consisted of widening NY 347 to accommodate additional travel lanes, improvements to the horizontal and vertical alignment, pavement reconstruction, new drainage systems (including recharge basins and rain gardens), traffic signals at three intersections, solar powered street lighting, ITS, pavement markings, signs, new utilities (gas main, water mains, overhead electric), sound walls, a shared use path, sidewalks, a green stop, bus shelters and extensive landscaping. The “green” infrastructure in the form of recharge basins and rain gardens with native plantings, as well as drainage swales were incorporated into the project reduce storm water runoff, help prevent flooding, and allow for immediate on-site infiltration of runoff.

The design and construction of this $36 million project was completed in 18 months. The work was constructed in three main stages of work with traffic maintained on the roadway throughout the project duration.

This project received the 2018 Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the New York State Society of Professional Engineers – Long Island Chapter as well as NYSDOT’s GreenLITES (Leadership In Transportation and Environmental Sustainability) program’s highest rating level attainable, a GreenLITES Evergreen certification.
